Social Security and Migraines
If you suffer from migraines, you don’t have “just a headache”. When migraines are not successfully controlled, they can cause serious problems with absenteeism and job performance. If you cannot work because of migraine headaches, McCroskey Law’s experienced Social Security attorneys may be able to help.
The Social Security Administration has not created a Listing of Impairment for migraines. This means that a migraine sufferer cannot automatically receive benefits by meeting a set of Social Security criteria. However, migraines are considered a medically determinable impairment, and may medically equal another Listing. If this sounds complicated– don’t worry– the lawyers at McCroskey Law can guide you through the claims process.
If you suffer from chronic migraines, which are uncontrolled by medication, you may qualify for Social Security disability or SSI benefits. McCroskey Law’s Social Security lawyers would suggest that you seek consistent treatment for your migraines and keep a migraine log to document their frequency and severity. You should also make sure that your doctors understand how frequently you are suffering from migraines, and how often you experience severe symptoms such as:
- Severe head pain
- Sensitivity to light and sound
- Nausea and vomiting
- Blurred vision
- Fatigue
It is also helpful to document any identified triggers.
