Our History
The firm was founded in the late 1940’s when various local unions in the Muskegon area went to a well-known Detroit firm and asked them to assign one of their lawyers to work in Muskegon because they were unable to get local counsel to represent them. The Detroit firm complied with the request, and soon thereafter opened a Muskegon office. The Muskegon office remained affiliated with the Detroit firm for approximately a year and then broke off and became a separate law firm.
Within a short period of time, Jerry S. McCroskey, an honors graduate of the University of Michigan Law School, joined the firm. Jerry was originally from Oregon, but during World War II he had attended Japanese Language School at Michigan, and he decided to return there after the War to attend law school.
During the 1950’s and early 1960’s the firm made a mark for itself in the area of workers’ compensation rights and personal injury. Many of the rules that we all live under today with respect to workers’ compensation resulted from the numerous Michigan Supreme Court cases handled by members of the firm. Additionally, the firm was instrumental in the founding of the American Trial Lawyers Association (then known as the National Association of Claimants’ Compensation Attorneys), and a member of the firm served as the first President of the Association.
In the 1960’s, the firm continued its efforts in the area of workers’ rights and also became more active in labor law on the side of unions. Jerry continued as head of the firm until his tragic death in an automobile accident in October, 1974.
McCroskey Law has worked to perpetuate Jerry’s legacy. We offer our clients expert counsel in many areas, including workers’ compensation, Social Security, personal injury, and family law. Christopher Rabideau is the firm’s current President.
