Veterans’ Social Security Disability Claims Are Now Expedited
On 2/19/2014, the Social Security Administration announced that veterans with a VA disability compensation rating of 100% Permanent & Total will receive priority status from the Social Security Administration. Similar to the claims of Wounded Warriors, 100% disabled veterans’ Social Security applications and appeals will be expedited.
Commissioner Colvin commented in the press release, “Our veterans have sacrificed so much for our country and it is only right that we ensure they have timely access to the disability benefits they may be eligible for and deserve.” Social Security is working with the VA to identify veterans who may qualify for expedited status.
Please note that while 100% disabled veterans will receive expedited status, Social Security is not guaranteeing that their applications or appeals will be granted. Disabled veterans will still be required to prove that they meet the Social Security Administration’s disability criteria.
However, because the cases of disabled veterans and Wounded Warriors are expedited, it is very important that they retain an attorney as soon as possible. You will have less time to develop your case for Social Security, so diligent and skilled representation is needed.
